In the Great White North, we all tend to feel a little more at home with a bit of nature indoors. Even in the colder winter months, the trappings of our summer getaways can make us feel just a little warmer. For any Minnesota luxury home builder, incorporating reclaimed wood design and embracing a bit of the cabincore aesthetic is the perfect way to add a deep level of comfort and beauty to their project.
Wooddale Builders did just this with one of their stunning newly built luxury homes in Medina, MN. In partnership with Tays and Co. Design Studios, the team crafted a wonderfully bright and comfy space with a number of modern elements balanced with the unique landscape of natural materials.
A liberal use of reclaimed wood from Manomin Resawn Timbers makes up the backbone of this design in the forms of beams, supports, floors, stairs, and furniture. The rustic appeal of reclaimed wood evokes the spirit of the North Woods.\
Laying the Groundwork With Reclaimed Wood Flooring
A staple of many luxury homes is a high-quality hardwood floor, often featuring reclaimed wood design, to set both a physical and aesthetic base for the interior. Reclaimed wood design not only adds unique character and charm but also introduces sustainability into your home. The sheer quantity of flooring in any house means that whatever material you choose, including reclaimed wood, it will have a great effect on the colors, hues, textures, and tones of the room.
Here, Tays and Co. Design Studios decided to go with warm, reclaimed white oak timbers for the main level flooring. The lighter colored wood, with its natural imperfections, begins to sell the cabincore feeling, bringing to mind images of days spent up north lounging in the midst of antique wonders.
The bright tone of the reclaimed wood soaks up the abundance of natural light shining in through the floor-to-ceiling windows and ensures a welcoming ambience throughout the house. The reclaimed white oak also blends beautifully with the more modern whites and greys of the living room decor.
Reclaimed White Oak Soaks Into the Kitchen
The warm-hued reclaimed wood design doesn’t just stop at the ground level. All of the kitchen cabinetry is custom-built in the same white oak as the flooring, giving the open concept living area continuity and depth. This seamless reclaimed wood design ties the entire space together beautifully.
The same bright tones make the kitchen another inviting space where an avid home cook could spend the day cutting and cooking while family and friends sit nearby. The wall-to-wall windows also allow a clear view of the tall trees in the yard, bringing yet another element of nature indoors.
The cabinets themselves feature a modern reclaimed wood design with clean lines and minimalist fixtures, but the natural depth of the reclaimed white oak tells you they are anything but ordinary. Their long, vertical slats bridge the gap between the floor and the matching reclaimed wood ceiling panels, making the space feel cohesive and refined.
Even the walk-in pantry is clad in smooth, reclaimed white oak panels and cabinetry. The abundance of this carefully selected material sets a strong tone for the main level of the home.
Decorative Reclaimed Wood Beams Seal the Cabincore Aesthetic
The reclaimed white oak motif continues upward as decorative box beams line the perimeters of the living space, showcasing the beauty of reclaimed wood design. Horizontal reclaimed wood beams follow the crown of the ceiling, painting the boundaries of the room. Vertical timbers provide some separation between the kitchen and living areas, further enhancing the cohesive reclaimed wood design throughout the space.
These applications of the beautiful reclaimed wood carry on the aesthetic established by the flooring and cabinetry and help to break up the space. The long, unbroken lines off the beams themselves serve the modern look of the home, while the natural texture of the wood adds to that rustic look.
Powerful features like these wood beams and struts, along with high vaulted ceilings, are commonplace in cabincore decor. The large, sturdy timbers evoke images of the antique structures many of these pieces originally came from. Using reclaimed wood is a great way to add some heft to your space.
Mixing Reclaimed Wood with Other Natural Materials for the Full Nature Effect
Tays and Co. Design Studio took the natural look to the next level in this build with stone-faced decorative walls. A stone veneer, barrel vaulted hallway leads away from the main living area, creeping part of the way into the kitchen.
The grey stone matches the other cool accents throughout the house and compliments the classic white oak that connects it. The more consistent color variation of stone veneer allows this hallway feature to maintain the continuity of the whole design while continuing to embrace the natural material aesthetic.
A Reclaimed Timber Mantel to Complete the Room
All luxury homes in Minnesota should be graced with a beautiful fireplace. It adds warmth and ambience through the winter months and strikes a powerful figure throughout the year.
The mantel is as important to the presence of any fireplace as the hearth itself. It can set the style anywhere from Victorian to arts and crafts to modern chic.
Here, Tays and Co. elected to continue their reclaimed white oak theme with a grand mantel. The wood beam overhangs a much more contemporary fireplace with fine tilework and a Samsung Frame TV recessed right into the surround.
The exposed grooves and patina of the wood lend their rustic charm to the more high-tech hearth. The design expertise from Tays and Co. continues the marriage between cabincore aesthetic and current trends.
Darker Accents from Custom Made Cabinetry
The old-meets-new aesthetic is completed in the bedrooms and bathrooms with custom-made built-ins and furniture. Made from a much darker, reclaimed antique pine, these reclaimed wood design features bring a well-worn look to the bright, modern rooms.
In the center of the walk-in closet, a dresser island contrasts the white floors and walls with the deep brown of its weathered antique wood. The dark colors find friends among the black shelf supports and window frames for an effective accent scheme, showcasing how reclaimed wood design can tie a space together with both character and style.
Building new pieces from reclaimed wood adds a complex layer to any room, while maintaining the functionality of freshly crafted cabinetry. Every drawer and cupboard moves smoothly, and each storage space is tailored to fit the owner’s needs, proving that reclaimed wood design can be as practical as it is beautiful.
This reclaimed pine double vanity acts as a wonderful centerpiece for the master bathroom. Again, the darker hues of the weathered wood accent and contrast with the whites and grays around it, and pull the eye to the wonderful detail of the timbers used to build it. A fantastic reclaimed wood design.
